South Congress Avenue

South Congress Avenue, often called SoCo, is one of Austin’s most recognizable neighbourhoods and a favourite place to experience the city’s creative personality. Stretching south from downtown across Lady Bird Lake, the district is lined with independent boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, murals, and historic Austin landmarks.

What to Know

The heart of the South Congress district sits just south of the Congress Avenue Bridge, making it easy to reach from downtown Austin. Visitors can browse locally owned shops, stop for tacos or coffee, catch live music, and photograph some of the colourful signs and murals that have become synonymous with the neighbourhood.

South Congress is also known for its view north toward the Texas State Capitol. The avenue’s mix of longtime Austin institutions and newer shops and restaurants makes it an especially lively area to explore on foot.
